The Software Café

Software, quality and lunch in a time before the internet.

A novel by Rupert Brown.

The Software Café: a novel, the story of a young engineer's journey through projects, share houses, love and office politics. A heroic search for the true meaning of software, quality and everything. Well, actually, not everything. The focus is more on lunch, or dinner, or both.

The Software Café: an epic set in a time before the internet when software development was a frontier and the map was being drawn in real-time; a reminder of how far we have come and how we have managed to forget so many of the lessons of history along the way.

The front cover of the Software Café.

The Software Café is about software, but not exclusively by any means. It considers how software engineers are thinking when they write their software, and how that meshes with the act of design. It describes a place that is defined by the weird and wonderful characters that operate there, and how their interactions shape a project, and ultimately failure or success. The strange and powerful dreams we have influence our actions, and in turn the story of Herne, Leviathan and Hope is helped along by several degustation menus and litres of vino collapso. There is nothing straightforward about software engineering, or life for that matter.

To get a taste of the Software Café, indulge yourself with some amuse-bouche.

This book is dedicated to all the young engineers of the world. By the end of the story, Herne, my main protagonist, has drifted off into a career cloud with Jenny, but one day he might turn up again, look you in the eye and ask 'well, what have you been doing?' So the advice is start, keep turning up, work the maths and innovate for success. The future of the world is in your hands so get cracking, now.

Oh, and I just wanted to say good luck, we're all counting on you.
